Gothic 1 Remake (2026) Review: Exciting RPG Comeback With Massive Unreal Engine 5 Upgrades

Gothic 1 Remake

Alkimia Interactive is bringing back one of the most iconic classic RPG games to life. We’re going to see Gothic 1 Remake with a whole new look while keeping the same soul as the original. The developers were almost forced to make this game because of the huge fan demand.

Introduction

This is going to be an action role-playing game developed by Alkimia Interactive. THQ Nordic is going to be the publisher. The original game was made in 2001 by Piranha Bytes. Gothic 1 Remake is going to bring back the experience of an old game with modern graphic design and advanced technology.

Forced to Build

First, in December 2019, THQ Nordic and THQ Barcelona published a demo. With the demo, they also released a survey and feedback form about the idea of remaking this game. The results were fascinating mainly because it received over 180,000 downloads. On top of that, there were over 30,000 responses.

At first, the reactions were generally mixed, but according to the publisher, over 90% of the players who downloaded the demo were in favor of remaking the game. Meaning the game already had fans who were ready to buy it or were looking forward to it.

Before making this game, they founded Alkimia Interactive for the sole purpose of making the Gothic remake.

Setting

It’s going to be a massive open world with a lot of crime and danger. The player starts with no skills, and the playable character goes through training. Character progression is mostly based on the choices you make in the game, where you can also find side quests and secrets.

Gameplay & Combat

The playable character goes through melee combat, ranged combat, and magic combat.

Features

In this game, NPC behavior is on a whole other level compared to modern games, with NPCs changing themselves according to their surroundings.

Same as the Original

One of the only things that stays the same is the skill system. It’s not a 100% copy, but it’s really close to it. On top of that, there is no mini-map, which is a bit surprising.

The Difference

At first, the original game was not fully completed. Some parts of the world lacked proper design because the game was made during a time when the developers were missing budget, so it was not fully completed. Some locations in the game were really well designed, while others lacked a lot of content.

So they made this remake to help add more quests and details to the parts that were incomplete in the original game.

Let’s talk about other things that are going to be different compared to the original game. First of all, lockpicking is going to be different because of the new details that they’re going to add to it.

Another thing is that the world itself is going to be 10 to 30% larger than the original. Other additions include puzzles, a third-person camera angle, different difficulty modes, a story with additional plot elements, better explanations of the story, and more.

Comparison

The original game can be finished in around 23 to 38 hours max, but the remake may take even longer because of the additional content and quests that the game contains. We’re probably looking at 30 extra hours of gameplay.

There have also been some changes to the armor, and players can tweak the armor a bit. It’s not a huge deal, but the most interesting part is that the weaponsmithing, food, and cooking systems have been remade.

For the NPCs, the developers acquired deep-learning AI tools to speed up the work process, while the faces of around 600 NPCs in the game were manually created.

Unreal Engine 5

This game uses Unreal Engine 5 version 5.4, which is very advanced.

Why Fans Are Hyped

From the beginning, when they created the demo, they knew this game had the potential to become a huge hype game. They were not completely sure at first, but after receiving a lot of positive feedback, they became confident that this game was at least going to perform well.

It’s one of the classic RPG comeback games, so it’s easy to understand why fans are looking forward to it.

Release Info

This game is still a bit uncertain, but it is probably scheduled to be released on June 5, 2026.
