Onimusha: Way of the Sword makes the return of Capcom’s legendary samurai official. The game presents brutal combat, supernatural enemies, all of that in a dark fantasy setting. If you think that is it, you’d be wrong because the game offers a lot more.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is going to be an action-adventure game that is being developed and published by Capcom. The last game in the series was Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams, which was released in 2006. It’s been 20 years, and I’m sure that both fans and newcomers are looking forward to the game.
The story follows Miyamoto Musashi, who explores a dark version of Kyoto during the Edo period. The place is filled with rival swordsmen, demons, and other supernatural threats. The story is going to be filled with humor, judging by the trailer, which highlights humorous scenes. The gauntlet can also communicate, which adds more curiosity to the story.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is played in third person. The main weapon used is the katana. You can strike enemies, parry their attacks, or deflect incoming objects. The game adds a stamina meter for all enemies. Once it is depleted, the enemy has to take a break, and this is where you can finish them in a single move. You can also use surrounding objects to your advantage.
There are other moves, like “Guard,” which blocks attacks coming from different directions. There’s also one more feature: when you parry successfully, a diamond shape on the screen fills up, and the blade gains a blue spike that gives a damage buff, which can be maintained.
If we talk about enemies, you’re going to be facing diverse enemy types. Each enemy is filled with three types of souls that our hero collects for his own advantage. The first one is yellow, which recovers health. The second is the red soul, which can be used to upgrade abilities, and the third is blue, which can be be collected to unleash a powerful attack.

If we talk about world design, we’re going to see castles, shrines, forests, hidden paths, and much more, but all of that is going to be presented in a cinematic way.
Fans are not only excited because of the return of the Onimusha franchise. It’s more about how it’s going to be delivered. I have seen the trailer and the gameplay, and it’s really amazing.
The team developing the game has visited official temples like Kiyomizu-dera to ensure that they accurately showcase them. On top of that, they even invited swordsmen to experience the motion capture studio to ensure the combat in the game is as close to reality as possible.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword was announced at The Game Awards in December 2024, and it’s expected to be released in September 2026. It’s not confirmed when exactly it will be released, but we expect it to arrive sometime in September.
Is Onimusha: Way of the Sword a sequel?
No, it’s not a sequel, but a new entry in the Onimusha series.
What makes Onimusha different from other samurai games?
It includes a realistic representation of traditional samurai combat while adding a fantasy touch.
Does the Issen counter system return?
Yes, the developers have confirmed that the iconic Issen counter system is returning.

If we compare Onimusha: Way of the Sword to the one released 20 years ago, it’s sure that it’s going to have a massive difference. However, I would like to see how it performs and what the old fans of the series think about the new game.
