Story

Humanity’s last hope is 12 light years away from Earth, a planet called Tau Ceti f. The crew was sent there to gather data on the planet from outer space. The idea was simply to gather information and send it back to the ship that was six months late. But after doing the simple task, the spacecraft crash-landed onto the unknown planet. And the game starts with the survivors trapped on an unknown planet where a mysterious shapeshifting monster awaits.

The End of the Story

There are many endings in this game, and all of those endings solely depend on your actions. But in this game, how you interact with your teammates also has a huge effect on the ending.

Characters

There are five characters to play as: Brianna Young, who is an astronaut and co-pilot of the spacecraft, Nolan Stafford, the commander of the ship, Officer Laura Eisele, Samantha, who is a medical specialist, and technical engineer Josef Cernan.

Brianna Young is based on Lashana Lynch and Nolan Stafford is based on Danny Sapani.

Gameplay & Combat

Directive 8020 lets you play as one of the survivors in a third-person perspective. It is a survival horror game with deep interactive drama. Players can also switch between the five survivors. Directive 8020 is divided into 8 parts, and each one of those takes at least 1 hour to complete, making the game around 8 hours in total. Players also have different modes to choose from.

Directive 8020 also features Turning Point mode, which brings you back to a previous moment or previous action. Survival mode does not allow Turning Points. With this feature, players can explore freely without frustration. For example, if you choose one decision and later wonder what would have happened if you picked another option, this feature lets you go back and experience it.

The monster can mimic other players very well, so even from the beginning, someone could already be replaced and you may not know until the end of the game. This feature is specifically made for players who want to explore every possible path.

Let’s talk about the combat system. You’re going to see quick-time events and live combat. The game has strong survival horror and action-adventure elements. But combat is not the biggest part of the game. Most of the gameplay is about staying quiet in the shadows, avoiding detection, and surviving.

Tools / Equipment

All the players are equipped with a multifunctional utility strap on their wrists. It includes a flashlight, but enemies can spot the beam, making it risky to use. There is also a scanner for electronics that can also detect the alien creature. Players also have a tool that can open doors and stun enemies, a text messenger system, and a remote-control hacking device that allows players to hack computers from a distance.

Multiplayer

There is also going to be a multiplayer mode called Movie Night, which was also seen in previous games. It allows up to five players to play co-op online.

Development

This game was first planned to be the eighth entry in The Dark Pictures Anthology, but during development it was changed into its own title.

Story and Design

This game takes inspiration from comics, books, real-life ideas, and famous TV series. For example, cosmic horror written by H. P. Lovecraft, films like Solaris and Alien, and more.

The name of the game was also inspired by NASA Directive 8020.7G, which focused on preventing harmful organisms from being brought back to Earth. That concept perfectly fits this game. The story is also similar to Apollo 10 because the crew was not supposed to land, just like in this story.
