Apple has launched a laptop (MacBook Neo) that starts at the lowest price ever seen. Many people will question the quality of the MacBook, but this is not the case. Even with the low price, Apple managed to preserve the premium quality. As we have seen recently, Apple is experimenting a lot with budget devices. Initially, they began with iPads, which cost around $329, and then they experimented with iPhones. No one thought that after iPads and iPhones, Apple was going to try something new with MacBooks.
Yes, it is official that the Neo is going to start at $599 with 256GB and no Touch ID sensor. If you invest $100 more, you will have Touch ID plus 512GB of storage. Additionally, we should not overlook the fact that educational customers are eligible for a discount of up to $100. This MacBook is nothing like the low-end iPad that feels cheap or hollow. The new MacBook Neo is as solid as the MacBook Air, even with some differences.
There are two main reasons that MacBooks have the potential to dominate the market. First, the price is good because some people wanted a MacBook but could not afford it because of the price. Now they can buy a MacBook without breaking their bank account.
Apple has made an affordable MacBook that was never imagined. We are given all the features needed for everyday tasks on the Neo.
he MacBook Neo price is already the best, but the colours are also attractive: Silver, Blush, Citrus, and Indigo. The design of the MacBook Neo is similar to other MacBooks but is lightweight.
Neo internal details
Processor: Apple A18 Pro chip
Memory: 8GB unified memory (base)
Storage: 256GB SSD or 512GB SSD
There are some elements that are similar to the older design, like the 13-inch display and the lack of a MagSafe connector. Yes, there are a lot of missing things, but we still have the good price and the modern design. The modern design is similar to the Air with a wedge-shaped M1 Air look.
If we talk about the internal display, you get a great deal for the price. The Neo sits between the current Air and the M1 Air. The Neo comes with a 13-inch 2408×1506 pixel LCD display, the same resolution as the old M1 Air. The Neo display supports 500 nits of maximum brightness compared to the MacBook Pro, which offers 1,600 nits of brightness.
Also, like the MacBook Air display, the Neo has a Liquid Retina (LED-backlit display with IPS technology), but the only difference is that the Neo is smaller. The screen has an sRGB color gamut (Standard Red Green Blue). However, the Neo is missing the DCI-P3 wide color support and True Tone feature that allows display temperatures to adjust based on the environment. These two features were found on the MacBook M1 Air.
For the chip, this is the first time ever that Apple uses an iPhone-class chip on a Mac instead of the M-series processors. The Neo MacBook is going to be powered by the A18 Pro chip that was used in the iPhone 16 Pro. Yes, the A series and M series architectures are similar, but the M series is made for laptops and overall performance.
The MacBook powered by the A18 Pro is similar to the M1 Air for day-to-day tasks, which is fast enough for work like browsing, productivity apps, and media consumption.
If we talk about RAM, there is no option to upgrade; the only option is 8GB of memory. At the same time, let’s talk about the CPU. The chip has six CPU cores, two performance cores and four efficiency cores.
Finally, let’s talk about the GPU. The new Neo has a five-core GPU, which should work fine for casual tasks like Safari with multiple tabs open, playing games, and more. But with those processes running, editing or heavy gaming is impossible.
The MacBook Neo has a 1080p FaceTime HD camera that will showcase video in HD. But compared to most Macs that have the more advanced 12MP Center Stage camera, it is more basic.
If we talk about microphones, there are two microphones built inside. These microphones use beamforming and noise reduction technology that captures only the voice without background noise.
Neo also comes with side-firing speakers that allow Spatial Audio support and Dolby Atmos compatibility.
Neo has about 30–45% less battery size compared to the Air, but thanks to the efficiency of Apple silicon, there is only about a 2-hour difference between the Air and Neo. Neo also offers up to 16 hours of battery life. Sixteen hours should be more than enough for browsing, streaming video, and doing productivity tasks.
The real problem comes when it comes to charging. First, it only supports USB-C charging, and at 20W, it does not support fast charging, which is something problematic.
Let’s compare with other Macs:
MacBook Neo: 36.5 Wh
13-inch MacBook Air: 52.6 Wh
15-inch MacBook Air: 66.5 Wh
hey made some minor changes to the keyboard. The letters were white on black before, but on the Neo, the keycaps are going to have legends on a lighter background. Everything else about the keyboard is similar to the Air.
The trackpad also got minor changes. The new trackpad has a physical clicking mechanism instead of haptic feedback. That means there are more Force Click controls for adjusting the firmness and noise of the clicking.
Initially, older trackpads had an issue where some parts of the trackpad did not feel the same, but now they fixed the problem, and the old trackpad design is back.
If we talk about Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and cellular connectivity, it supports Bluetooth 6, but the Wi-Fi is one generation older.
On the newest iPhone 17e, they are launching the C1X modem instead of the C1. We thought we were going to see the newest cellular connectivity, but the MacBook does not support cellular networking.
There was also a rumour that Apple created their own wireless networking chip called the N1. It was rumored to launch with the MacBook, but it is not coming on the Neo.
Apple has given two USB-C ports, which may cause confusion because both ports have different functionality. For example, the rear port supports 10 Gbps USB 3 transfer speed and can connect to an external display, but the front port only allows 480 Mbps USB 2.0 transfer speed, which is enough only for keyboards and accessories.
Yes, this may cause confusion, but there will be a notification saying that the plugged-in device may not work because of port limitations.
Nowadays, the new MacBook Air and MacBook Pro both exceed $1000, and even between the Air and the Pro there is a big price difference.
Because you need at least $1000 to invest in the Air, I think Apple did a really good job launching a MacBook that is around $500. With this price, we can even buy two MacBook Neos instead of buying one MacBook Air.
Pre-orders will start on March 4, and real sales will begin on March 11.
Apple also saw that there was still demand for the M1 MacBook Air with 256GB SSD for $649 at Walmart. That is why they realized they could create something to replace that model and make Neo a competitor to older MacBooks.

What is MacBook Neo?
It is a new budget MacBook, similar to how the iPhone has budget models.
When will the MacBook Neo release?
Pre-orders have already started, but it will officially be available in stores on March 11.
How much will the MacBook Neo cost?
It is estimated to cost around $500–$599.
Is MacBook Neo cheaper than MacBook Air?
Yes. With the price of one MacBook Air, you could almost buy two MacBook Neo models.
People who did not want to invest a big amount of money and were scared to spend too much on a laptop may find this a good moment to buy this budget MacBook. It is a strong competitor to Chromebooks because everyone knows Apple is a premium brand, but the price used to be high.
Now it is much more accessible to everyone. Yes, it does not allow heavy tasks like video editing, graphic design, or rendering, but for the majority of people, it should be more than enough, and they can take advantage of this MacBook.
