Do you know the first ever video game was created in 1958? That’s right, it’s been 66 years since the gaming era started. From then to now, every year, so many games are released, so I will be talking about a game that came out this year. It is a shooter game called Helldivers 2.
The cooperative third-person shooter Helldivers 2 was created by Arrowhead Game Studios and released by Sony Interactive Entertainment in 2024. The game is a direct follow-up to the top-down shooter Helldivers from 2015. On February 8, 2024, it was made available for Windows and the PlayStation 5. Helldivers 2 was well-received by critics and went on to become both Sony’s most successful Windows game and the fastest-selling PlayStation game ever—it sold over 12 million units in just 12 weeks after its debut. Helldivers 2 is a third-person shooter as opposed to Helldivers, which is a top-down shooter. As the famous “Helldivers,” players pilot bullet-shaped “Hellpods” that are dropped from orbit onto hostile worlds. While battling armies of opponents in randomly generated stages, players must fulfill goals to advance in the game. Once they have, they can try to summon a ship to transport them to their Super Destroyer, which is orbiting the planet. Gamers have the option to choose any level of operation difficulty, from level 1 (trivial) to level 10 (super helldive). The objectives on each level must be completed by players in order to unlock the next difficulty. Higher-difficulty task completion yields greater experience points and in-game money rewards. ‘Stratagems’, which are offensive tools and weapons like bombing runs, rocket launchers, sentry guns, and orbital strikes that must be summoned by pressing a series of arrow keys and hurling a beacon to signal to the player’s Super Destroyer in orbit, are a fundamental gameplay element that has been carried over from the first game. There is always friendly fire. Helldivers 2 lacks shared-screen cooperative gameplay, while Helldivers did. There isn’t a separate single-player campaign in the game, but it does offer cooperative multiplayer for up to four players. Additionally, cross-play between Windows and the PlayStation 5 is a possibility. When the game first came out, users could see studio employees watching them and making real-time changes to the gameplay. “Warbonds” are an in-game combat pass system that never expires. There are seven Warbonds that have been released as of August 8, 2024: “Cutting Edge,” “Helldivers Mobilize,” “Steeled Veterans,” “Democratic Detonation,” “Polar Patriots,” “Viper Commandos,” and “Freedom’s Flame.”. While playing the game, players can earn many kinds of in-game cash. For example, “requisition slips” and “war-bond medals” are granted for finishing missions, operations, and game objectives, while “super credits” are found during missions or can be bought with microtransactions. Different weapons and techniques are unlocked for use during missions by players as they advance in level and accumulate experience. Aside from gathering “samples” throughout gaming, players can also obtain ship modules that modify and boost the potency of certain methods. Players also aid in the advancement of “major orders” sent from Super Earth by finishing operations. The Second Galactic War is relevant to these directives. The percentage of “liberation” or defense levels/points of planets that the players have contributed is calculated and shown on the Galactic Map. A century has passed since “Super Earth,” a self-described controlled democracy, defeated the Cyborgs, Bugs, and Illuminate during the events of the first game in the Helldivers series. It is found that the Terminids create a rare and extremely precious material called E-710 when they die. On worlds that humans have colonized, farms are built; however, confinement is eventually broken, releasing the bugs and wreaking havoc. The Automatons, a mechanical army out to exterminate humans, present a new menace at the same time. A recruitment film for the Helldivers, elite shock warriors sent back from orbit to retake the colonized areas, opens the game. After completing a brief training program on Mars, new players are dispatched into space to man their own Super Destroyer and engage in combat in the ongoing Second Galactic War. The game has a lot of environmental narrative, with players able to discover a variety of diaries, notes, and propaganda statements while playing.
In my opinion, this game is a fun one to play; however, I haven’t given it a try yet, but I will sure do. And make sure to try it as well. Overall, I think shooting games are quite popular these days, like, for example, Fortnite, Valorant, and many more. I will rate it a 7 out of 10.
