Casting Shadows: Flintlocks and the Siege of Dawn

Introduction

There will be many different games releasing this year with their highly improved graphics and storytelling. Most of them have a Soulslike genre like Elden Ring, the new game coming up this year in August 2024, Black Myth: Wukong (I wrote an article about this game too, so you can check it out.). But regardless of this, today we are going to be talking about a game releasing in 2024 in July. The game I am talking about is called Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn.

What is this game about?

Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn is an upcoming action role-playing game developed by A44 Games. This is going to be releasing on Playstation 5, Windows, and Xbox One Series X/S on July 18, 2024, and played from a third-person perspective. The person who takes the player’s control is called Nor Vanek. Nor Vanek is a member of a coalition whose goal is to protect mankind from the brink of going extinct. To complete this quest of his, she must do it by fighting against the ancient gods. In this game, players can use melee weapons and Flintlock firearms (as you may get a clue from the name of this game) to attack enemies, though ammunition is hard to find in this game. As the player character attacks or blocks incoming attacks, they will slowly fill up the enemy’s armor gauge. Once it is completely filled, players can unleash a devastating attack that instantly defeats regular enemies or significantly weakens a boss character. Defeating enemies with Nor’s axe will replenish ammunition for her flintlock weapons, whereas eliminating enemies with her flintlock firearms will restore her armor. The player will have Enki, a mysterious fox-like creature, as a companion. Enki can be directed to distract or stun enemies, teleport the player, or imbue Nor’s attacks with magic. Through Enki’s magical abilities, players can obtain the unique skills of a boss character by defeating them.

What will we find inside the game?

Flintlock is an open-world game that is divided into three regions. Players can participate in various extra activities that might affect how the game world looks and the people in it. For example, defeating enemies in a village will cause its original residents to come back, which opens up new missions and additional things to do on the side. As players finish quests and explore the world, they will encounter other characters who are not controlled by players. Some weapons are obtained by earning “reputation,” which players gain as they advance in the game and complete quests. Losing reputation happens if the player character dies, but it can be regained at the place where they previously died. Players can also acquire new abilities by earning experience points, which remain with the character permanently. Some of these characters will join the player’s group and appear at their caravan. Nor’s caravan acts as a central area where players can craft or upgrade items.

Conclusion

Personally, I love to play these games with the Soulslike genre, but this year action role-playing games are on another level. When I was writing about Flintlock, this game is filled with adventures, I realized. This game feels like an anime to me, in my opinion, and the anime’s where the main character is able to play the game being inside it. I hope it feels the same when I play it.
