Apple wanted to try new trends with its new iPhone, which is light, fast, and fun to use. The design looks great and premium in the hand. The iPhone Air is the thinnest ever made to showcase how far humanity has come. It failed horribly. Apple products were rarely discounted, but after seeing the iPhone Air sales, they discounted it up to 40% to get rid of it and did more. The iPhone Air did not succeed in taking over the hearts of users who like superiority and the robust features of the Pro and Pro Max. Why did this happen? Is it the same thing that happened between iPhone 6 and iPhone 12? iPhone 12 was better in price, battery life, features, and design. Is it because the iPhone 17 Pro takes all the spotlight? Or is it because people really want something that can handle daily tasks without slowing you down?
Problem
The iPhone faced a lot of challenges, mainly in battery life, camera, and price. With dozens of surveys, the main issue was the short battery life. Users are saying that short battery life combined with a single camera sensor for a premium $999 does not make any sense. For some bucks more, users can get the 17 Pro.
Key Reasons for Low Sales
Missing Features: Things like battery life, more cameras, and dual speakers, which consumers expect at a premium price point.
High Price Point: The iPhone 17 Pro has a similar price point compared to the iPhone Air.
Value Retention: The iPhone Air lost 47.7% of its original value within 10 weeks; because of that, some people feared buying it.
At first glance, it is impressive to put features in a thin device. But with the Air, they lose a lot of things like the extra camera lenses found on the Pro models. They could have tried to make a Google phone with 2 cameras. It is sure that because it is small and thin, there is less battery, and even the speakers are too quiet. With all those things gone, the price is still at $999. This is why the 17 Pro became easy to grab.
Customers really love to take care of their iPhones, buying protection for the screen and back protection. But when we look at this thin iPhone, it naturally raises the question about its strength. I am not questioning the quality of the top-notch titanium frame, but users are worried about sitting on it, smashing it, or a small drop. They want something solid and confident.
I am also not questioning the battery quality, but there are two types of use: light use and heavy use. The apps that we use are becoming more demanding, so having a thicker device that carries more energy is comforting, and taking photos is also important. So just deleting one or two cameras is a bold move.
Discount
On Amazon U.K., the Air (unlocked) price has been discounted by $204, and that is a big thing because it is rare that a discount goes above $136. It is more around $68. Even Chinese retailers are selling the 1TB Air for $731, down from $1,115 for the 256GB model.
Like I said, in 10 weeks the Air has lost 44.3% of its average value, but the 1TB Air has lost 47.7% of its value.
Impact
First of all, suppliers like Foxconn and Luxshare have cut or stopped the production of Air. Second, Apple delayed the future models. The next Air is going to come late or come in the models of 18. Third, big companies like Samsung and other big competitors, seeing Apple pulling back on the game, changed their own strategies. They changed their plans because if a big player like Apple can’t make a good profit, then why waste their money and resources on a dying game?
Comparison
If we compare the 17 Pro, for $200 more you can get better battery life, better cameras, and better speakers, but it is not going to be thin. If we look at the sales in China, the company’s share market grew 22%, but with the 17 Pro series, the Air was low in single-digit numbers.
In Conclusion
Nowadays, people are looking for a phone that packs a punch. If we talk about Air, Apple did drop the idea of releasing Air 2. Yes, it is going to be delayed because they are planning to show something that is fully developed and not half-baked just to hit a deadline. We expect that because of this, Apple is going to bring more features in iPhone 18.
